Abstract

Recently, there is a growing interest in infrared thermography, which is now well developed and in common use, because it is safe, compact, portable and inexpensive, and it usually gives real-time information easy to interpret. Nevertheless its clinical applications are not extended over a wide scope since clinical thermal pathology is not established yet and the measurement conditions are not standardized.
Therapeutic methods of far infrared light are in commercial and clinical use, but it is considered rather mysterious than scientific, and it is hard to handle specific diseases.
In these reasons, the correct understanding of the mechanism of thermography and thermal and bio-optical properties of human tissue are important.
In this paper, a brief review of the history of optics and the infrared technology is presented. Also the possibility of standardization of thermal measurement and the optical characteristics of infrared light in tissue are introduce.
